Debye Screening in the Qcd Plasma

چکیده

Various definitions for the QCD Debye mass and its evaluation are reviewed in a non-perturabtive framework for the study of screening of general static sources. While it is possible to perturbatively integrate over scales ∼ T and thus construct a 3d effective theory, the softer scales ∼ gT and ∼ gT are strongly coupled for temperatures < ∼ 10 GeV and require lattice simulations. Within the effective theory, a lattice treatment of screening at finite quark densities μ< ∼ 4/T is also possible.

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we examine the behavior of correlators of Polyakov loops and other operators in N =4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at non-zero temperature. The implications for Debye screening in this strongly coupled non-Abelian plasma, and comparisons with available results for thermal QCD, are discussed.

Emphasizing the importance of renormalization in the context of thermal field theory it is pointed out that the Debye mass in the hot quark gluon plasma is determined by the coupling at the scale mD, not T as commonly presumed.
